Kick Off Event

L.E. Phillips Memorial Library
Join us to kickoff the month long community event which will involve our entire community’s reading and discussion of Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon. Come see the books get a police escort from members of the Eau Claire Police Department and get your free copy! Learn more about the programs that are planned from a panel of community leaders! Find out how you can get involved in fostering literacy and an appreciation of literary reading.

Movie Showings
Tuesday, April 22, 7 – 10 p.m.:
Maltese Falcon Film Fest I
Join us to watch two film versions of the novel: Roy Del Ruth's "The Maltese Falcon" (1931) and "Satan Met a Lady" (1936; a comedy murder mystery based on The Maltese Falcon novel, starring Betty Davis). There will be a 10-minute break between the films.

Thursday, April 24, 7 – 10 p.m.:
Maltese Falcon Film Fest II
Watch the award-winning 1941 version of The Maltese Falcon starring Humphrey Bogart, followed by a half-hour documentary, the highly-regarded The Maltese Falcon: One Magnificent Bird. LE Phillips Memorial Public Library Assistant Director and Media Librarian John Stoneberg will lead a discussion comparing the different version so the film to the novel.

To end our Big Read with a bang, we’ve invited two high profile speakers: Richard Layman, renowned Dashiell Hammett biographer scholar (see below) and Julie Rivett, Hammett’s granddaughter, will lead a discussion of Hammett’s life, writing and legacy.
Richard Layman, the editor of Discovering The Maltese Falcon and Sam Spade, has written six books on Dashiell Hammett, including Literary Masterpieces: The Maltese Falcon, Dashiell Hammett: A Descriptive Bibliography, and Shadow Man: The Life of Dashiell Hammett. He was nominated for an Edgar Award by the Mystery Writers of America for editing Selected Letters of Dashiell Hammett, 1921-1960 and has been nominated for another Edgar Award for Discovering The Maltese Falcon and Sam Spade.
